First Annual Matt Maupin Memorial Kids Fishing Tournament Set
Batavia, Ohio. In honor of fallen Union Township Army Staff Sergeant Matt Maupin, the East Fork Bass Anglers are renaming their annual kids fishing derby at Pattison Park, the first annual Matt Maupin Memorial Kids Fishing Tournament.
"Matt used to fish in this tournament when he was a kid and his dad has been a member of the club for years," said Roger Kellough with East Fork Bass Anglers. "We want to honor the sacrifice Matt made to our country, and we think he would enjoy this tribute."
The tournament, held in cooperation with the Clermont County Park District, will be held on Saturday, May 10 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Pattison Park, located on US50 near Owensville. Children 15 and under can cast a line and compete for prizes, including smallest and biggest fish caught.
"It's so much fun to watch some of these kids catch their first fish," said Clermont Parks Chief Naturalist Keith Robinson. "We expect well over 100 children to take part in the tournament and afterwards we will serve a free lunch."
"We'll have worms available and can help the kids bait their hooks," said Kellough, who says the lake at the park is full of catfish, carp, bluegill, and bass. "Even though this is a catch and release lake, on this day, the kids can keep one of the fish they catch."
