Batavia, Ohio. Join the Clermont County Park District for a fun and informative evening of stargazing on Friday, February 20, 2009. Scan the clear night skies for the Seven Sisters of the Pleiades star cluster, the planet Venus, and the constellation Orion. “Beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Chilo Lock #34 Park, the Midwest Astronomers group will be available with their telescopes to help us identify the many stars and constellations that fill the sky,” said Clermont Parks Chief Naturalist Keith Robinson. “Winter is a great time for stargazing and because the Chilo Park is away from city lights, you’ll have a great opportunity to view the night light show.”
The Seven Sisters star cluster contains hundreds of stars, but only a few can be located without the help of a high powered telescope. Venus is known as the Earth’s “twin” because the two planets are similar in size; from the Earth, Venus is brighter than any planet or star. At this time of the year, it generally appears as a crescent.
“After the stargazing, we’ll gather in one of the yurts for hot chocolate,” added Robinson. For more information about Stargazing or any of the programs offered by the Clermont County Park District, call (513) 876-9013.
